Nature-based solutions
Southland’s fertile and rugged landscape provide plentiful opportunities to enhance and encourage economic returns in the form of management, tourism, processing and value-add industries, including:
- Forestry and greening our urban space can significantly assist our transition to a low emission economy. Almost 30% of the regions emission are offset by trees.
- Increasing the amount of carbon stored in soils could potentially offset large amounts of our annual emission.
- Having the longest coastline in New Zealand, Southland can also benefit from blue carbon which is the sequestration of coastal mangroves, wetlands and marine species.
- Opportunities to grow seaweed for carbon sequestration, food or fuel and restore our whale population, with every whale sequestering 33x more carbon than a tree
