Space Operations Engineer

We are seeking applications from go-get engineers who want to turn their dreams of working in the international space community into a career.

About the Role

Based in Invercargill and working at Great South’s satellite ground stations, this position calls for an experienced electrical, electronic, or mechatronic engineer.

You will work with customers’ engineers from around the world - a great way to learn new skills, better understand the technology and develop networks.

The successful candidate will enjoy fixing a vexing hardware fault, coding in C/C++ and Python, soldering components onto PCB boards, supervising a concrete pour and climbing a ladder wielding a big spanner, though not at the same time. It demands someone who can take the initiative when things look like they are turning to custard and is able to come up with practical solutions. It requires someone who can help develop a big-picture idea and has the tenacity and technical understanding to then realise it.

Established in 2004 Great South’s ground segment facilities have supported missions and launch campaigns.  Customers include Rocket Lab and the international small-sat industry. We also work closely with the University of Canterbury and University of Auckland and assist with their rocket launches and satellite missions.

About you

You will have plenty of initiative to solve tricky, mission-critical, time-bound problems and enjoy working with an enthusiastic team.

You will hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree, or a Bachelor of Technology degree in electrical, computer, mechatronic, or electronic engineering.

You will be competent coding in C/C++ and Python, and you will know your way around Linux. You won’t be all-thumbs when it comes to soldering components onto pcbs or terminating cable connectors.

About Us

We are the only civilian workplace in New Zealand where you will get hands-on experience working on the entire space value-chain (excluding human spaceflight): spacecraft development, rocketry, ground stations, mission operations, space operations and payload data analysis. You will rub shoulders with engineers from throughout the international space community.

Great South is Southland’s Regional Development Agency. Great South is a Council Controlled Organisation with an independent board. We are focused on creating “even better lives for all Southlanders” through sustainable development.

Invercargill’s reputation for being family-friendly is well deserved, with affordable housing, great schools, and amazing facilities. With Fiordland, Stewart Island and the Catlins on our doorstep, we are uniquely situated to enable easy exploration of the region's world-famous attractions. We encourage a good work-life balance and with direct flights, Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington are within easy reach. All good reasons why working in Southland is a great career and lifestyle choice.
